Books – My first love

I have fallen in deep love with books particularly in the past three and a half years. Had a discussion with one of my friends on book reading and posting that here..

My mother normally quotes “Books are windows to the world of wisdom”.In the past 3.5 years I have been reading ‘religiously’ almost on a daily basis I don’t read any particular day I feel something is missing in my life thinking how much amount of impact books reading makes in any individualism you put in simple mathematics, assume that anyone reads 6 pages a day for 3.5 years (365*3.5*6) it works out to be 7665pages.Even if you remember 10% of the knowledge and implement it is 766pages.What it actually means is, books provide you knowledge by which can intuitively predict the future eliminates the fact that you should have ‘experience’ to do anything in life you closely observable can make lot of sense out of what other elders sebaceous you gained a knowledge at a young age by reading they gained by their life time you are able to gain it from books. I also see in a globalization, knowledge world it is very important to readout’s happening in the world gives you a ‘connected’ feeling see most of the successful people that I know of are passionate about reading and they are virtuous readers irrespective of their busy life.

Also I have personally seen some of merely-life role models have this habit of reading. In order to keep the reading habit going I have tried and formed the following habit and it works out wonderful.

  • Make book buying as a regular activity like you buy grocery book shops frequently helps to keep updated with latest books.
  • Read the “books review” section in famous magazines would help to get a review of books.
  • When special occasions (Like b’day, anniversary etc..) give and takebooks as gifts. I always ask my mother to buy me books on my b’days forthe past two years instead of dress or money. This keeps the ballrolling.
  • When you are reading the books try to change topics between twosuccessive books. My cycle is Business–>Philosophy–>Investing–>Technial–>Some comedy book and thenback to business book. This will help you not to get bored with same kindof books.
  • Start maintaining a learning log (I am maintaining one) in which you cannote down some ‘top-learnings’ from a particular book and keeprefreshing it as and when time permits.- Finally we are in the ‘Information Age’ where knowledge is power andbooks are very good source of providing knowledge.

I am back

After almost an year I am back to writing blogs. This time I am determined to continue blogging on my favorite areas.

Indian Budget 2005-2006

Couple of days back India’s current finance minister P.Chidhambaram presented the union budget. Chidhambaram, a Harward university graduate through his budget made it clear that Indian economy is integral part of the world economy. This time it is been a “Spree” for salaried class employees. Myself and many of my friends end up “Saving” 30K Indian rupees per year. This shows how reforms are now making the salaried class move up in the economic chain. Also from this year he is going to introduce Value Added Tax (VAT) which is expected to bring down the corruption as far as sales tax is concerened.

Not but not the least Chidhambaram’s orgin belongs to a small village called Kandanur in south tamilnadu, where my mother born and brought up. In fact Chidhambaram studied in the school where my grandfather also worked as a teacher close to 30 years.

Heavy price

The topics related to economics is becoming very interesting area for me nowadays and I am making some serious attempts to know more about the world economy. When the western world went for “Industrialization” during the 17th and 18th centuries, my country India was looted left and right. Other than that when India got independence in 1947 our leaders went for a “close” trade policy and killed the entrepreneurship instincts of Indians because of which many generations suffered a lot. After opening up the Indian economy in 1991, my generation is able to see lots of FII and “Open” trade, which is helping many Indians to accumulate wealth. From the so called “Third world” my country is transforming slowly and moving towards becoming a developed country.

Because of the closed economy and the “Socialistic Democracy” policies of the govenment many of my previous generations have suffered which is a heavy price we have to pay for mistakes our leaders have made.

The “Services” world

Off late I have become a very regular watching some of the TV programs. Ramalinga Raju CEO of Satyam Computers, said “The 2/3 of the world GDP contribution comes from the Services Industry. When I heard this I was really suprised”. Not only Ramalinga Raju, me too got surprised to know the potential of the services industry. However these services is existing because of the R & D which is made by various research arms of organizations/universites. My perception about the services Industry has changed after listening to the TV program in which Ramalinga Raju appeared.

The Himalayan Masters

I am currently reading a book named “The Himalayan Masters” by Swami Rama. The book is all about yogis who stay in the secret caves of Himalayan mountains in search of spiritual enlightment. It is believed that these masters are there for more than 5000 years in the himalayas. Initially they acquired the knowledge through Vedas and then upanishads. Eventhough as a common man, I am not able to understand very “complex” sanskrit in which these vedas have written, this book has made serious attempts to convey the messages of the masters in a simple way. When I am reading this book I am able to easliy co-relate the messages with our normal “materialistic” world. But when I think about these masters I just don’t have any words to explain their knowledge which they had thousands of years ago. These are some things which are very unique to India which one can understand more when make serious attempts to understand it.

The NDTV way

I always like people/organization who make a difference in whatever they are doing. In 1990s when I was 10 years old I used to watch this guy “Pranoy Roy” coming in election analysis in National Channel India. His election analysis program got a huge appereciation among people in India and he went to STAR NEWS and there also his news program became very famous. In the recent past this guy along with very good team started his own new channel “NDTV 24×7″and “NDTV India”. Last month they launched “NDTV profit” in which they are going global and giving business news all around the world.

Mr.Roy’s approach I call something like “Planned Entrepreneurship”. From a 2 hr program to three 24/7 news channels he has grown a lot. This guy has introduced a new trend in India.

My first post
